Collaboration Brings Vision to Life. Local physicians work with City of Pensacola and neighborhood association to open The Woodlands Center for Specialized Medicine

Over 175 friends, colleagues and other well-wishers gathered Thursday evening for the official grand opening of the Woodlands Center for Specialized Medicine. This celebration marks the culmination of a 5-year process that has brought the vision for a new brand of healthcare to life for the Pensacola community.

Long before the first patient walked through the doors of the Woodlands Center for Specialized Medicine in December 2009, the physicians of Woodlands Medical Specialists had a vision to create a patient-focused healthcare experience unlike any other in the area. However, turning that vision into reality was no easy feat for a group of doctors with little experience in developing a 76,000 Sq Ft multi-specialty practice from the ground up. To accomplish this goal, the physicians of Woodlands Medical Specialists sought assistance from many stakeholders, ranging from officials at the City of Pensacola to the facility's new neighbors on North Davis Highway. "If I may sum up our experience in one word, it would be collaborative ", says Linda D'Amore, CEO of Woodlands Medical Specialists. D'Amore credits the successful opening of the new building to the synergy created among the physicians who envisioned Woodlands practice, the design firm responsible for the building, and the local city and county government officials accountable for making the process run smoothly. "From beginning to end, we really had a great spirit of collaboration that helped make this such a successful project" D'Amore concluded.

Dr. Thomas Tan, a founding physician of Woodlands Medical Specialists, approached the Atlanta office of the Charlotte-based design firm Cogdell Spencer ERDMAN in 2007 upon the recommendation from a colleague. "I'd learned through the grapevine that ERDMAN was the ‘go-to' firm to build the type of facility we were looking for" says Dr. Tan. "After our first discussion with them, I had a strong feeling that they could help us execute our vision." Gary Tree, Project Executive of Cogdell Spencer ERDMAN, expressed his pleasure in working with Dr. Tan and the Woodlands group. "They were completely open to ideas from the start" says Tree. "They knew our expertise in designing patient-centered facilities, and they really trusted our ability to deliver on that promise."

The professionals of Cogdell Spencer ERDMAN were no strangers to building state-of-the-art facilities of this scale, but did face some unique challenges in designing the Woodlands facility on North Davis Highway. Randy Hogan, CCIM and Development Manager of ERDMAN, stated some of the initial challenges up front. "In an effort to please our neighbors and the environment, we really needed to work around the large number of mature trees on the building site." Hogan and Tree brought in a team of experts including civil engineers and even an arborist to determine the best use of the land. "Our team of experts worked together with the city to preserve the land as much as possible. We were even able to save about 70% of the mature trees on the site" Tree said.

Hogan credited the city and county officials for making the building process go smoothly, citing their willingness to work closely with his team. "On most projects the city is either entirely pro-business or pro-environment; Pensacola is one of the rare cities that actually weighs both equally. It's clear they will work hard to bring business to the area, but they also work hard to preserve the current natural environment." Ed Spears, Neighborhood & Economic Development Administrator for the City of Pensacola, said he enjoyed his experience working closely with the Woodlands team. "This project really brought together all of the aspects the city focuses on, including job creation, the use of clean technology, and the reuse of property."

CEO Linda D'Amore said the Woodlands team was also well-received when they first approached the community on North Davis Highway. "At our first meeting with The Woodland Heights Neighborhood Association, our discussions were very fruitful. There was a great level of respect and desire to make this work for both sides." D'Amore went on to say that they were so inspired by the community and its members that they dedicated the name of the practice and the building to them. "The Woodlands name comes directly from our community. We feel that it truly represents who we are and what we value. It became the clear choice for our practice name after the project began."

D'Amore said she was pleased—but not surprised—with the team's collaborative spirit from the start. "It all began when the physicians of Woodlands Medical Specialists came together to create this patient-focused practice. For three different specialty groups to join together under a single vision really takes a desire and willingness to work together." D'Amore concluded, "I've seen collaboration with this group from the start, so it comes as no surprise that the building development followed suit."
